Die Zöliakie ist eine der häufigsten, lebenslangen Erkrankungen in den Industrienationen. Es handelt sich um eine Erkrankung des Dünndarms, die durch Getreideproteine ausgelöst wird. Betroffen ist rund 1% der Bevölkerung in Europa, Nord- und Südamerika sowie Indien und in Teilen von Afrika.
Eine therapeutische Behandlungsmöglichkeit von Zöliakie-Patienten gibt es nicht. Die Konsequenz ist eine strikt Getreideprotein-freie Diät. Diese ist nur äußerst schwer einzuhalten und für die Patienten mit einer erheblichen Beeinträchtigung der Lebensqualität und Sozialisierung verbunden. Des Weiteren führen Diätfehler, absichtlich oder unabsichtlich, zu einer Reihe von schweren Folgeerkrankungen.
ZEDIRA hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Diagnose der Zöliakie zu verbessern und das erste Medikament zur Behandlung zu entwickeln.
ZEDIRA wird als management buy out von Dr. Martin Hils und Dr. Ralf Pasternack aus dem Biotechnologieunternehmen N-Zyme BioTec heraus gegründet.
