What is a “University of Applied Sciences”?

Universities of Applied Sciences offer programmes in engineering, business management, social sciences and design. They differ from other universities by preparing students for their future professional careers through application-oriented instruction.

Bavarian Universities of Applied Sciences offer an eight-semester Diploma programme. This is based on six or seven theoretical semesters and two practical semesters or an internship and a practical semester. The objective of the internship and the practical semesters is to provide students with insight into the structure, administration and operational procedures in industry, commerce, the social sector or the public sector.

Many Universities of Applied Sciences have begun offering seven-semester Bachelor’s degrees and two- or three-semester Master’s degrees. These well-structured, tightly organised programmes have become an increasingly viable and popular alternative to those offered at more traditional universities. Companies appreciate the application-oriented teaching methods and practical work experience which allow graduates to integrate quickly into the business environment.

The objective of practice-oriented education is to enable graduates to apply theoretical and method-based knowledge to concrete practical problems. Students systematically learn how to transfer these skills as they study. They are supported by instructors who were (or still are) managers and leaders in industry and commerce.

Important elements of practice-oriented instruction are:

Lectures in small groups (generally no more than forty students per lecture)
Lecturers with professional experience in industry and commerce (a minimum of five years)
Labs, tutorials, simulations, role-playing, projects and field trips
Integrated practical semesters in commerce and industry
Study projects, practical projects and thesis
