Speed and clinical precision are vital in the initial treatment of a burn patient. WATERJEL®, who have over 25 years experience in the production of the world’s most advanced Pre-Hospital burn injury dressings, have now repackaged their range of burn dressings, to assist the Emergency Services and Medical Professionals worldwide to provide extra clinical information to the receiving emergency centre.
One of the most critical areas of burn injury management is the assessment of the area of the patient’s burn injuries – the Total Body Surface Area (TBSA). This assessment will have a major influence on the amount of fluid required for fluid resuscitation in both the pre-hospital and in-hospital setting.
The most common measurement for assessing the area of burn injury on the patient in the pre-hospital setting is Wallace’s Rule of Nines; the adult human body is broken up into measurement areas based on multiples of 9%, with the exception of the groin area (1%).
WATERJEL® dressings now show on the packaging, the Total Body Surface Area (TBSA) covered by the dressing that the responding crew choose to use on the burn injury. The crew can now correctly estimate the TBSA for the receiving A&E Department, this in turn will help the trauma team to prepare for the burn injured patient, and the packaging reflects the TBSA for both adults and children.
