The Company – Past and Present
Ofa Bamberg was founded in 1928 by Otto Fankhänel in Zeulenroda, Thuringia.
The present company name Ofa is derived from that of its founder. In 1948 the company resettled to the Upper Bavarian town of Bamberg. Gradually, modern production facilities for medical stockings, support stockings and bandages were installed and the company was quickly able to assert itself on the market.
In 1987, the former proprietor, Karl Fankhänel, took the decision to sell the company. Today, the Ofa Bamberg company belongs to INDUS Holding AG in Bergisch-Gladbach, a quoted company group comprising 39 medium-sized businesses from a variety of sectors.

Innovations from Bamberg
Ofa Bamberg is one of the leading German manufacturers of medical stockings and bandages and was a pioneer in the field of so-called individualised made to measure production. This means that the stockings are manufactured in accordance with a patient’s individual leg dimensions, and accordingly have an extremely precise fit. The success of the company has always been determined by innovation. Ofa Bamberg set itself the goal early on of replacing the rather thick and unattractive rubber stockings with a variety which is indistinguishable from other modern and elegant stockings. This goal was achieved with a wide range of fashionable colours using a number of modern materials. Ofa Bamberg was the first manufacturer of medical stockings to make use of extremely soft microfibres and to introduce fashionable accessories, like the attractive lace adhesive strip. In doing so, Ofa Bamberg successfully asserted its development to the extent that virtually all other manufacturers were forced to follow suit.
The product range was able expanded towards non-prescription products, i. e. support stockings and travel stockings to apply the company´s expertise to preventive healthcare products.
In 1994, Rathgeber Bioform GmbH in Heilbronn was purchased, with the effect that Ofa now had an additional involvement in the growing market for health and comfort footwear. These products, along with inlays and foot protection products, are now marketed under the name of Rathgeber from Bamberg.

The product area of bandages and orthoses has also expanded continually.
Whereas the original range consisted solely of textile bandages, today it covers the entire spectrum of bandages and orthoses for use on virtually every joint.
Ofa Bamberg does not only operate nationwide in Germany but also exports its products all over the world, e. g. particularly successful on the Japanese market.
