SMC is the world’s largest manufacturer of pneumatic components and associated equipment. With production, research, development, sales and customer support facilities in over 40 countries, customers can draw on the experience and resources of SMC at local, national and international level, giving access to the latest developments in pneumatics technology around the world.
Established in Japan, in 1959, SMC has led the way in design, manufacture, innovation and high quality – developed to meet the needs of application throughout the world, and reflecting the close working relationships which SMC builds with its customers, to find the most cost-effective solution.
SMC has only been active in the United Kingdom since 1978, operating initially from a room above a hairdressing salon. The rise from relative obscurity has been swift and dramatic. The company now operates from a purpose built site in the new city of Milton Keynes which has been extensively developed.
SMC places high emphasis on Research and Development, with this areas of the company’s activities employing one quarter of the total workforce. Research and Development engineers have the task of creating new products to meet the ever changing needs of industry, and keeping the company at the forefront of technology.
Recent achievements include the introduction of new cylinder and valve seal technology, and high speed solenoid valves. In addition, advances have been made in the development of ultrahigh vacuum technology for the semiconductor industry.
SMC products are manufactured to standard of quality laid down by BS en ISO 14001:1996, ISO 9001:2000. Every item is checked during each stage of production and received a final seal of approval immediately before despatch. The primary objective is to ensure a long a totally reliable operating life for every product, for guaranteed peace of mind.
SMC’s quality procedures comply with those of other major manufacturing organisations world-wide and enable the company to support a wide range of Just In Time production operations.
With extensive engineering, development and test facilities based in Milton Keynes, SMC can offer a competitive design and build service for the construction of pneumatic and electro-pneumatic control systems and sub-systems.
Each system or sub-system is manufactured to specific requirements and can incorporate components both from SMC and other suppliers, plus the necessary control panel and enclosure. All construction work is carried out under the control of a highly skilled team of designers.
SMC’s product range is the most extensive of any pneumatics supplier. It covers virtually every conceivable product group and includes components and assemblies that are unique to SMC.
World-wide, the company offers more than 9,100 basic products with in excess of 530,000 variations.
