Microfluidics, applied to sandwich or competitive immunoassays, very significantly speeds up analysis and reduces sample consumption.
Over the past few years, DiagnoSwiss has developed polymer devices with the advantages of microfluidics for bio-analytical applications, including Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assays (ELISA) and nanoelectrospray sampling. Microchip consumables, produced by a plasma etching process, harbor eight parallel microchannels, with integrated electrodes for electrochemical signal readout or derivatization of elements in situ.
Extensive characterization of the microchip fluidics eventually allowed developing a platform in which liquid flows are solely driven by gravity and capillary forces. The simple fact of placing microchips on tilted holders allowed eliminating maintenance-intensive pumps and valves.
